Description: A substantial antique American oak roll-top desk by Cutler, with the classic form and generous storage that made these desks such practical pieces of office furniture.
The desk features a beautifully figured oak writing surface beneath a tambour roll top. Opening the roll reveals a fitted interior with numerous pigeonholes, small drawers and compartments for organising papers, stationery and correspondence. The exterior provides nine drawers across the twin pedestals and centre, giving the desk an impressive amount of storage.
The Cutler name is particularly associated with American roll-top desks. Abner Cutler of Buffalo, New York, patented an influential flexible slat roll top desk design in the 1880s, and Cutler desks became well-known pieces of American office furniture.
Of particular interest is the original plaque mounted to the front of the desk, reading “Arthur E. Stitchbury & Coy. Ltd., Office Furniture Specialists, Sydney.” Arthur E. Stitchbury & Co. were the Australian importer and supplier of this desk, dating it to approximately 1920–1930. This surviving supplier's plaque provides a wonderful connection between the desk's American manufacture and its history here in Sydney.
The generous knee area measures 65 cm high x 72 cm wide, providing plenty of room and allowing the desk to accommodate even a wider style of office or desk chair comfortably.
A wonderful statement desk with plenty of character and a very usable working surface, particularly suited to a study, home office, library or traditional commercial interior.
