Description: An impressive English mahogany sideboard dating to circa 1850, with beautifully figured timber and distinctive architectural detailing. The rich mahogany grain across the front gives the piece wonderful depth and character, while its strong proportions create an elegant presence without excessive ornamentation.
The sideboard features three drawers positioned above the cupboards, providing convenient additional storage. Below, a central panelled cupboard door is framed by two projecting pedestal sections. Particularly striking are the finely carved fan and shell-form appliqués to each side, complemented by rounded mouldings, bun feet and a shaped raised back with restrained scroll detailing.
The interior offers excellent, versatile storage. Each of the two outer sections has a removable shelf, with about 32 cm of storage height above and below the shelf. The central cupboard also has a removable shelf, providing approximately 34 cm storage height above and 32 cm below. Removing the shelves lets the compartments accommodate taller pieces when needed.
The broad top provides generous display or serving space, while the combination of drawers and adaptable cupboard storage makes this a particularly practical piece. The curved pedestal fronts, figured mahogany panels and finely executed carved details demonstrate the quality of the cabinetmaking.
Dating to the mid-19th century, this is a particularly attractive example of English mahogany furniture. Its rich timber, sculptural detailing and generous storage make it an impressive piece for a dining room, entrance hall, living room or traditional interior.
