Description: A striking antique rosewood pedestal sideboard with wonderfully elaborate carving and a strong architectural presence. Inspired by the bold designs associated with Thomas Hope and the English Regency period, the piece features an impressive raised backboard dominated by four large opposing scrolls, surrounded by deeply carved foliate decoration and a central classical-style motif.
The long top is finished with carved and reeded edge detail, while the frieze below features closely spaced vertical reeding on the face of the three long, spacious drawers. Two substantial pedestal cupboards flank the generous central opening, each with beautifully figured rosewood panelled doors. The bases are particularly decorative, with deep gadrooned moulding and low bun feet giving the piece a substantial, grounded appearance.
Opening the pedestal doors reveals useful fitted storage. One side incorporates an internal drawer and cupboard space, while the other has a series of pull-out trays, an interesting surviving feature that adds to the piece's character and practicality.
The quality of the rosewood, the elaborate scroll backboard, and the extensive carved decoration make this a particularly impressive example of Thomas Hope's antique furniture. Its combination of practical storage and highly decorative detailing would give it considerable presence in a dining room, entrance hall or large living space.
