The composition depicts a young squire kneeling in prayer, holding the cross-shaped hilt of his sword, as he observes the traditional nightlong vigil undertaken before a medieval knighting ceremony. The original painting was exhibited in 1884, measures 115.8 cm x 170.3 cm and forms part of the Tate Britain collection in London.
