Description:
The sloping fall front features an oval fan inlay positioned at its centre, formed from contrasting timber veneers arranged in a radiating sunburst pattern. This decorative detail creates an attractive focal point, beautifully complementing the natural grain and warm colouring of the surrounding mahogany.
The writing flap opens downwards to reveal a fitted interior with multiple open compartments and two small drawers, each finished with a decorative brass knob. The compartments provide convenient storage for stationery, correspondence, notebooks, writing accessories and other personal items.
A particularly practical feature is the pair of pull-out supports positioned beneath the writing flap. These slide forward to support the desktop when opened, creating a stable writing surface positioned at a comfortable 72 cm from the floor. When not required, the writing flap closes neatly, concealing the fitted interior and allowing the bureau to retain its attractive traditional appearance.
Beneath the writing section are three generous full-width drawers, each decorated with contrasting timber stringing and fitted with two traditional brass swan neck handles mounted on circular backplates. The drawers provide substantial storage for documents, household items, personal belongings and other essentials.
The bureau stands on traditional shaped bracket feet, with a decorative shaped apron beneath the bottom drawer. The combination of the sloping writing front, elegant inlay, brass fittings and traditional proportions gives the piece a refined appearance associated with classic English furniture design.
One of the great advantages of an antique writing bureau is its versatility. Unlike a conventional desk, the writing surface can be closed when not in use, keeping paperwork and stationery neatly concealed while maintaining the appearance of an attractive piece of furniture.
Its compact, upright design makes it particularly suitable for a study, bedroom, living room or home office, providing a dedicated writing space without requiring the floor area of a traditional desk.
The combination of the decorative fan inlay, fitted writing compartments, practical pull-out desktop supports, and generous drawer storage makes this antique mahogany bureau both an attractive and functional addition to the home.
