Born in Dalry, Ayrshire, he studied at the Glasgow School of Art before continuing his education in Paris. He became widely recognised for his atmospheric landscapes, particularly those of the Scottish Highlands and Lowlands, where his masterful use of light, colour and seasonal changes brought the countryside vividly to life. In recognition of his contribution to Scottish art, he was elected an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy before later becoming a full member (RSA).
